Understanding the Automatic Spectral Balancing of BalancEQ

HoRNet BalancEQ is a unique six-band equalizer designed to analyze and balance your mix automatically. Unlike traditional EQs that require manual adjustments, BalancEQ intelligently detects the spectral distribution of your audio and applies precise corrections to achieve a natural and well-balanced sound.

In this in-depth video, we take a closer look at how BalancEQ’s algorithm functions. Using TotalEQ, we demonstrate step by step how the plugin processes audio, from analyzing LUFS levels to dynamically setting EQ bands and filtering unnecessary low frequencies.

Key Steps in BalancEQ’s Algorithm:

  1. LUFS-Based Normalization:
    • The plugin waits for a stable audio input (at least 3 seconds) and measures its integrated LUFS level.
    • The audio is normalized to -24 LUFS to ensure consistent spectral analysis.
  2. Spectral Peak Detection and High-Pass Filtering:
    • BalancEQ scans the frequency spectrum to find the highest peak in the audio.
    • A high-pass filter is automatically set, starting at 30 Hz and increasing until it reaches a point where the level is 15 dB lower than the highest peak.
  3. EQ Band Adjustment:
    • The plugin analyzes six specific bands (200 Hz, 400 Hz, 800 Hz, 1600 Hz, 3200 Hz, and 6400 Hz).
    • Each band is compared to an ideal reference curve based on pink noise (-4.5 dB/octave).
    • If a band is significantly lower in level compared to the dominant frequency, it is ignored to prevent overcorrection.
    • The difference between the measured level and the reference level determines the EQ gain for each band.

Why Use BalancEQ?

BalancEQ is ideal for producers and engineers who want a transparent, balanced mix without spending time manually tweaking EQ settings. It provides automatic tonal correction, ensuring that every track sits well in a mix while maintaining a natural sound.
