Spaces is an algorithmic reverb VST plugin that lets you model a square room with customizable dimensions and proportions.

To create the simulation, Spaces uses a technique called “Digital Waveguide Network.” This method simulates natural audio reflections inside a closed space and calculates how much diffusion results from each reflection.

This algorithm simulates rooms, halls, or any closed space with accuracy. HoRNet Spaces specifically focuses on cubic rooms of different sizes and proportions. Poorly designed rooms can sound bad, so we included three preset room types with fixed proportions that deliver good acoustics. We labeled them “small,” “mid,” and “large,” based on their distinct height, width, and length ratios.

When you select one of the preset rooms, adjusting the height control automatically changes the other two dimensions to match the room’s proportions. Spaces doesn’t aim to be an all-purpose reverb plugin. Instead, it focuses on creating realistic rooms, halls, and enclosed spaces. You can design these spaces in custom room mode using three sliders that control height, width, and length.

The room size determines the “room modes,” or the frequencies where the room resonates. These modes create the unique reverb sound of the space. The plugin’s central display shows the main frequencies of these modes—axial, tangential, and oblique. Additionally, HoRNet Spaces lets you adjust the room’s diffusion. An empty room produces less diffusion than one filled with furniture. With the diffusion control, you can design spaces ranging from an “echoey bathroom” to a lush hall.

Reverb time varies across different frequency ranges because certain frequencies reflect differently. By adjusting the “high absorption” and “low absorption” controls, you can fine-tune the reverb tail and create a more realistic sound space.

We have updated HoRNet Spaces to v1.1.4, a bugfix release that includes:

The update is free for current owners of the plugin and can be downloaded from the user area.
