We have just updated CLMS, the system designed for loudness-compensated mixing, to version 1.1.0.

HoRNet CLMS solves the “loudness deception” issue by maintaining a constant perceived loudness during mixing. This ensures a more accurate mixing experience.

As you may know, the human ear perceives frequencies differently at various loudness levels. This difference can lead to misjudgments during mastering and mixing decisions. When you use effects like an equalizer or compressor, the signal level often changes significantly, which may cause you to make incorrect mixing choices.

HoRNet CLMS keeps the loudness level constant throughout monitoring, allowing you to focus on the mix without worrying about loudness shifts.

CLMS revolves around the concept of Loudness Units (LU) and includes two separate plugins. HoRNetCLMS_Send reads the LU level of the track before processing. Then, HoRNetCLMS_Receive, which you usually place last in the master chain, adjusts the gain to match the sender’s LU reading, ensuring a consistent loudness level.

CLMS works with a simple mechanism. HoRNetCLMS_Send reads and stores the LU level of the track in a shared memory area. HoRNetCLMS_Receive retrieves that value, calculates the difference between its input LU level and the one stored by the sender, and adjusts the gain to maintain the output at the same LU level.

You can insert as many HoRNetCLMS_Send plugins as your session needs. The plugin includes a button that activates communication between the sender and receiver. However, this communication is exclusive, meaning only one sender can interact with the receiver at a time.

We’ve also added a LUFS normalization utility to HoRNetCLMS_Receive. You can set the target level by clicking on the text box and then clicking the “analyze” button. The plugin measures the average LU level of the track. Once the analysis is done, you can enable the “normalize” button to automatically adjust the gain and make the track as loud as needed.

This release includes:

  • Added Apple Silicon M1 support
  • Fixed small GUI on Windows with high DPI monitors
  • Removed 32-bit support

The update is free for plugin owners, and you can download it using HoRNet DoIn or from the “my account” page.
