EBU R128 Loudness Meter, now improved.

HoRNet ELM 128 MK2 is a lufs meter plugin that complies with the EBU R128 standard. The plugin provides five different loudness measurement: momentary, short-term, integrated, dynamic range and true peak.

The plugin supports mono, stereo and 5.1 surround metering with a handy history graph that you can use to see the loudness of your signals up to 12 hours earlier.

This new kind of lufs meter comes from broadcasting and aims to reduce the difference in the perceived levels of different programs, to help with this task HoRNet ELM128 MK2 also provides a normalization function that adjusts the gain in realtime so that no signal exceeds the reference set by you, the normalization can work using any of the loudness reading of the EBU R128 standard (momentary, short term and integrated)

The ELM128 MK2 uses LUFS as measurement units (Loudness Units Full Scale) a LUFS is equivalent to  a dB but the difference come from the pre emphasis filter used before any loudness calculation, this filter compensates the non linearities of the human hear do that any measurement takes into account ho we human perceive sounds.

The five meters use different integration times and metering concepts:

  • Momentary: measures the loudness of the last 400ms
  • Short term: measures the loudness of the last 3s
  • Integrated: it’s the recorded loudness since the beginning of the measurement (or from the last reset operation) but discarding the longest silence parts or the highest passages that may occur in a long program (a movie, a tv show, etc.)
  • Range: is the loudness range of the program in LU
  • True Peak: this meter shows the maximum level of the signal in dBFS using a 4x oversampling (below 192KHz sampling frequency) to faithfully represent the inter-sample peaks.

We decided to not provide a demo for ELM128 MK2 because we don’t want to to cripple our product too much and limiting the capability of this plugin for a demo would mean to provide a bad testing experience.

How to rearrange the surround meters order to L.C.R.Sl.Sr.Lfe ?
Thanks!

Great little plug-in and a very responsive company! Version 2.2.0 had a big that caused a spike in volume when a track suddenly went from silent to loud. Shorty after I pointed out, Saverio issued version 2.2.1 with the fix in place. I'm now using this to auto fix voice over material that varies widely in level in level more subtly than any compression tool ever could. This is just one of several plugins I've purchased from HoRNet and they're all great.

Nice metering, and the normalize would be very handy, but I can't see a way to see what level it's set at. Once you stop and restart the song, it restarts the normalizing process. It'd be nice if you could get it to level and then at least see what gain it's applied or have it remember the gain. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see this feature. Great plugin overall, though.

The "Norm" feature needs some preroll to be useful, otherwise I get a huge spike as it's trying to turn up silence when the track starts. I didn't notice that with the previous version. Now it's just glorified metering.
